I went to dinner at a Thai Restaurant in Glover Park with a friend of mine from Junior High (who just so happens to live 2 blocks away from me in DC). I had been CRAVING Thai food all day. The tofu, the spices, the delicious noodles and broccoli…YUMMY! Being on the CONSISTANT DIET means you eat half and put the other half in a to go box, so that’s what I did. On the way back to our neighborhood we passed 2 homeless men that were asking for money. As I went to see what change I had to spare, one of the men said, “Honestly, I’d rather have the food. I’m hungry!†I have never met a person on the street that asked for food, it’s usually money.
It’s a weird sensation having someone say those words and truly mean it. It’s a feeling I have never known. Sure I’ve been “hungry†before, but that meant I hadn’t eaten for a few hours. I smiled, handed him my to go box, and went on my way…After he opened the box he probably felt like he got the short end of the stick since I ordered TOFU =)
It was in that moment, the day before the Quest to Be a Better Person was to begin, that I knew I was supposed to embark on this journey. It’s the little things in life. Being able to help someone else with no ulterior motives…it’s an unexplainable feeling.
