It made me super happy and a little emotional to see that it was the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge’s Birthday today on Facebook.
Of course I immediately googled to see if July 16th was the day it opened and sure enough…yep yep it is! July 16th 2005. I remember when I was in Charleston auditioning for the 2 Girls and a Guy Morning Show (this was the end of July 2005) and the BRIDGE was all everyone could talk about.
“Have you seen the new bridge?”
“Have you been over it?”
After seeing Wedding Crashers with one of the Sales Reps from the station, he (like everyone else) asked if I had been over the bridge. I informed him that I had not, so he showed me Arthur. We drove from Downtown to Mt. Pleasant….then turned around…and went back over the bridge to Downtown. I wasn’t all that impressed. Yea. It was a gorgeous bridge, but it was just a bridge. Little did I know that “Just a Bridge” would become my second favorite place in the world (Disneyland being first).
It has one of the most beautiful views of Charleston. The sunsets look better on the Bridge, the water glistens a little more while looking down from the top of Arthur, the clouds form into better cloud animals…
It is my happy place. The place I went when I was having a bad day and wanted to get away, the place I went to gather my thoughts, the place I went to have a meeting with the Universe. I called the Bridge my Church because I always felt better and more connected to myself and a higher power while I was there.
Not all walks were spiritual, some were just gossip sessions with my girlfriends or much needed work outs because my pants were getting a little too tight.
Eventually, I started referring to Arthur as my boyfriend. I was with him all the time and I was happier when I was with him or after I had spent time with him, plus he let me walk all over him and didn’t complain (obligatory cheesy Bridge joke). Eventually our BF/GF status became a official because Arthur and I were “In A Relationship” on Facebook.
Needless to say, I’m sad I can’t wish Arthur a Happy Birthday in Person but I promise to make it up while I’m on my Bachelorette Party in Charleston this weekend!
Happy Birthday Arthur & LOOK OUT CHARLESTON! HURRICANE BROOKE IS COMING TO TOWN!
For the record, YES! I realize (as I read this back) I sound a little crazy…
